Red-tailed Hawk Fledgling

Buteo jamaicensis (fledgling)

Red-tailed Hawk Fledgling

A fledgling red-tailed hawk has left the nest and spends time clumsily flying between trees, poles, and nearby perches. It still depends on adults for much of its food while learning to watch open ground for rodents and other prey. Its hunting attempts often involve short flights, awkward landings, and practice dives rather than the efficient stoops of an adult. One notable fact is that young red-tailed hawks usually have a banded brown tail instead of the brick-red tail of mature birds.
