Anna's Hummingbird Hatchling
Calypte anna (hatchling)
Newly hatched Anna's Hummingbirds are tiny, naked chicks lying deep in a cup nest of plant down and spider silk, often placed on a branch in gardens, scrub, or open woodland. They cannot fly and rely completely on the female parent, who feeds them regurgitated nectar mixed with tiny insects and spiders. Their main behavior is gaping and giving faint begging calls when the nest is visited. A notable fact is that a hatchling may weigh less than a paper clip when it emerges from the egg.
