Anna's Hummingbird Nestling
Calypte anna (nestling)
Anna's Hummingbird nestlings remain in the elastic nest while pinfeathers open and the bill lengthens. They still depend on frequent feedings of nectar and small arthropods, which provide both sugar and protein for rapid growth. As they mature, they stretch, preen, and flutter their wings while staying low in the nest. The spider-silk nest can expand as the growing chicks press against its walls.
