Grey-headed Woodpecker
Picus canus

The adult grey-headed woodpecker lives in mature deciduous and mixed forests, parks, orchards, and wooded farmland across much of Eurasia. It forages on trunks and on the ground, taking many ants with a long sticky tongue as well as other insects and some fruit. Adults excavate nesting cavities in softened or decaying wood and drum on resonant surfaces for territorial display. Compared with many woodpeckers, it is often quiet and unobtrusive, relying on greenish-grey camouflage among trees.
