American White Ibis Juvenile

Eudocimus albus (juvenile)

American White Ibis Juvenile

A brown-and-white young wader that has left the nest but has not yet gained the adult's clean white plumage. It frequents shallow wetlands, muddy pools, lawns, and tidal edges while learning to probe for insects, crayfish, small fish, and other soft-bodied prey. Juveniles are mobile and increasingly independent, but their foraging technique is less efficient than that of adults. Their duller coloration helps distinguish them from breeding adults in mixed feeding areas.
