Sacred Scarab Beetle
Scarabaeus sacer

A robust black dung beetle of dry grasslands, sandy soils, and grazed Mediterranean habitats. Adults feed on dung, cut and roll portions into balls, and bury them for feeding or breeding. They use strong legs and a hard exoskeleton to push, dig, and resist rough contact on open ground. This beetle is famous for rolling dung balls backward using its hind legs while navigating across the landscape.
