Woolly Bear Caterpillar
Pyrrharctia isabella (larva)

A fuzzy banded caterpillar found in fields, meadows, roadsides, and gardens across much of North America. It feeds on the leaves of many low plants, including asters, clovers, grasses, and weeds. When disturbed, it curls into a tight ball so its stiff bristles face outward. A notable survival trick is overwintering as a larva, tolerating freezing conditions with natural antifreeze compounds.
