Western Gorilla

Gorilla gorilla

Western Gorilla

Adult western gorillas inhabit humid lowland forests, forest clearings, and swampy areas in west-central Africa. They are mostly ground-dwelling knuckle-walkers, using strength, displays, and close contact to defend space rather than constant fighting. Their diet is largely fruit, leaves, stems, pith, and bark, with occasional insects taken opportunistically. A notable fact is that they help disperse many forest seeds through their fruit-heavy diet.
