Serviformica Ant Queen
Formica fusca (queen)

The queen lives chiefly in underground soil nests, beneath stones, or within decaying wood, where workers protect and feed her. After her mating flight she usually sheds her wings and spends most of her life laying eggs, sustained by food brought by workers. Her diet includes regurgitated sugary liquids and protein-rich insect prey supplied by the colony. A notable fact is that a mated Formica fusca queen can found a new colony and may live for many years compared with the short-lived workers.
